ABOUT THE COLLEGE:
School of Legal School is one of the oldest Law Schools in India. The Law School was initially started as a part of the Kerala University in the year 1962 and it became part of Cochin University in the year 1971. SLS has made valuable contributions to the study and research of law in the past 54 years, fully living up to the motto of CUSAT ‘Tejaswinavadhitamastu’ meaning ‘may the wisdom accrued deify us both-the teacher and the taught and percolate to the universe in its totality.
SLS offers LLB, LLM and Ph.D programmes. The LLB Programme, started in 1994 as an evening programme, is now semesterised, full day programme. From 2009 as per the directions from the Bar Council of India, the 5 Year LLB. course had been restructured and a BBA. LL.B programme is offered in its place. In the year 2013 SLS has also started B.Com. LLB programme. Both BBA. LLB and B.Com. LLB programme consists of regular course of study for a minimum period of 10 semesters in five years after plus two. The course of study shall be by regular attendance at the requisite number of lectures, tutorials and practical training. The medium of instruction shall be English. Number of seats: Number of students to be admitted each year shall be decided and notified by the University from time to time.
The LLM course is a semesterised and credit based program with continuous evaluation. Specializations in various branches of law are offered. The most important features of LLM programme include weekly seminars, legal aid outreach programmes and student involvement in the publication of law journal. The course necessitates the students to choose two subjects as their specialization area. The students are required to do one paper from each specialization area in all four semesters. In addition to this, the students are also required to study compulsory papers which focus on jurisprudential and research aspects and an elective subject in each semester. Students are expected to do dissertation of approximately 20,000 words on a topic of their choice that relates to the area of their specialization.
From 2012, School of Legal Studies has been 3 Year LLB programme for graduates. The Bachelors Degree in Law (LLB) shall consist of regular course of study for a minimum period of six semesters after graduation. The course of study shall be by regular attendance at the requisite number of lectures, tutorials and practical training. The medium of instruction shall be English.
SLS offers both full time and part time Ph.D programme in law for the purpose of encouraging research in contemporary legal issues.
In pursuit of the academic excellence and foster research, SLS established the Centre for Intellectual Property Rights in the year 2003. The Centre being a part of School of Legal Studies offers courses on IPR for the LLM programme of the School. The Centre is supported by the MHRD, Government of India which has already established a Chair on IPR in the Centre. In partial recognition of the potential for transforming School of Legal Studies in to a Centre of Excellence, the University Grants Commission has inducted SLS under the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) in 2011. Further, the Government of Kerala has established J. V. R. Krishna Iyer Chair on Human Rights at School of Legal Studies.

The candidate shall have a minimum of fifty five percentage (55%) of marks in aggregate of the degree examination. A candidate belonging Scheduled castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) or Other Backward Communities (OBC) shall be eligible to seek admission if they have a minimum of fifty percentage (50%) of marks in aggregate of the degree examination.
Procedure for Selection
Admission to the course shall be made from the rank list prepared by the University on the basis of the performance of the candidate in the Common Admission Test, group discussion and interview. If large number of candidates qualifies the written test, a short list of five times the sanctioned strength of the course shall be made and all candidates from this list shall be called for group discussion and interview. In cases where there is no adequate representation of SC, ST or OBC students in the said list, SC, ST or OBC candidates, as the case may be, who have appeared for the CAT may be invited for group discussion and interview. The pattern of reservation prescribed by the University shall be followed in the admission procedure.
The curriculum shall consist of 20 compulsory, 6 optional and 4 compulsory practical training papers prescribed by the Bar Council of India. The optional papers will be chosen and offered by the school from among the optional paper in the syllabus.
